Passion For The Future

Mecca Abdul-Aziz '18 Recommends You 'Move for Your Future Now'

Mecca is a writer, a worker who contributes to the local community, and a woman who is already actively thinking about her future. As a communication major, she is a goal-driven person who has participated in four internships, as well as her work with a variety of student organizations. Her journey toward a bright future started from her freshman year.

Mecca Abdul-Aziz鈥淵ou have so many experiences, tell me about your first internship.鈥

鈥淚 was very nervous鈥 was a community development intern at City of Hamilton. Having heard from my aunt about the position, I applied for it. I was really nervous because this was my first internship, but I tried to be mature and always stayed involved. I learned a lot about local government in urban areas.鈥

鈥淚鈥檝e always been trying to build my resume, and working towards getting a job after school.鈥

鈥淢any freshmen may pay more attention to their surroundings rather than preparing for their future. What made you think like that?鈥

鈥淚 wanted to spend campus life having a plan. For example, my goal is to get my degree so I can get a good job after college. I鈥檝e always been goal driven. When I鈥檓 doing something, it鈥檚 for a goal. So anything I鈥檓 doing is for a specific purpose. I鈥檝e always been that way, even before college.鈥

鈥淪o do you think freshman should start taking action toward the future?鈥

鈥淵es, definitely. They should start thinking about it now. The longer you wait, the more opportunities you will miss.鈥

鈥淗ow do you think students can plan or prepare for their career?鈥

鈥淲ell鈥 talked to many people like my aunt, my friends and Wendy in Career Services to have my resume checked. Also, I have always attended career fairs or any event in my department, like CABLE, which is exactly what helped my career a lot.鈥

鈥淛ust recently, as a senior class president, Wendy and I had a workshop like Delta 101 for seniors. We focused on career vision, resume, and cover letters. She pushed for the Job and Internship Board to help us find a job. She emphasized it鈥檚 one of the best resources on campus. I very much appreciated it. She is always very friendly and helpful. We LOVE their services!鈥
